James and Keith Penfold were nephews of Frederick Wilhelm and Margie Ann Coe Arbuthnot. Dorothy and Leslie Penfold and Luzern Coe were relatives of the Arbuthnots. Frederick Wilhelm Arbuthnot was a son of William and Mary Elizabeth Bader Arbuthnot. William came to Boulder County in 1859, eventually homesteading on Left Hand Creek in 1864. He married in 1869.
